Dear fellow parents and guardians,

Please join us at the SEPAC open board meeting next Tuesday to learn more about how the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) monitors special education at Newton Public Schools.

In the coming weeks, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Newton Public Schools. In advance of this review, review chairperson Andrew MacKenzie will hold an orientation session for parents and guardians of Newton Public Schools students in special education on Tuesday, April 9th at 7:30 PM in Room 210 at the Newton Education Center, 100 Walnut St. The session will familiarize parents and guardians with the Office of Public School Monitoring, the Tiered Focused Monitoring Process, and the online parent survey. The Office of Public School Monitoring visits each district and charter school every three years to monitor compliance with federal and state special education and civil rights regulations. Tiered Focused Monitoring is the process used to conduct these visits. We hope you will be able to attend.
We also plan to post a copy of the presentation to the SEPAC web site.
Thanks!
